Case Study for the Implementation of New Features for Culture Booster

Executive Summary

I was brought in by Taylor Wegner on behalf of the Culture Booster, a Human Resources Software, in order to design a new set of features. As a team, we did a competitive audit, collectively made low fidelity mock ups of several possible features each, did a Kano Analysis and based on seven survey responses, and then individually made two journey maps and prototyped solutions based on an available “budget” of two sprint cycles.

Competitive Audit

The first thing we did was research Culture Booster’s competitors, HR softwares like Bonusly, Teamphoria, 15Five, Motivosity, and most notably, Lattice. We documented what they had in common, and notable differences and ways to improve upon the concept. As you can see, I personally did the analysis for Motivosity and 15Five.

Present Experience Journey Map

Using our findings from the competitive audit, I completed a present case Journey Map to show how the target user (a manager at a small to medium business) would feel and think during the existing process with other software.

Low Fidelity Feature Cards

With the manager in mind, we drew out several feature cards each, arranging them in FigJam and then having them looked over by the developer. He gave us a rough estimate as to how much work each feature would be to implement, as well as their budget of resources - two sprints worth of work. Four feature cards that I made that were chosen to continue.

Kano Analysis

Next we did a Kano analysis of the chosen features. Shown below are all features that were chosen, their Kano score, and the number of “points” out of 22 that they would cost. These can also be downloaded as a .pdf here.

High Fidelity Wireframes

With the data from the developer and the Kano analysis, we then chose the features we thought were best to add based on their likelihood to please the user and how much they cost to implement. My clickable prototype can be found here, showing all screens the were mocked up, including designs to initiate a review, view employee data, write up talking points and questions for an upcoming review, start and complete a review, and view past reviews per employee. Below are some key stills from the prototype.

Future Feature Journey Map

With this new feature set in mind, I made another journey map, this time showing how the user (the same manager from a small to medium business) would feel and think during the process of a performance review through Culture Booster.

Next Steps

To continue iterating on this project, I would run usability testing on the new features before implementation. Then, after a minimum viable product was established, I would begin designing the experience of stretch goals like visualizing employee data with customized graphs, and adding a widget for performance reviews to the manager dashboard. This continuous development would eventually iterate into a lovable and meaningful product, not just a viable one, the ultimate goal of user experience design.
